New Delhi: After the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was lifted, as many as 185 people from outside Jammu and Kashmir have bought land in the Union Territory in the last three years. "One person bought land in 2020, 57 bought in 2021 and 127 in 2022."

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai on Wednesday told Rajya that the information was provided by the government of Jammu and Kashmir. He, in a written reply, said that no land had been bought by outsiders in Ladakh as per the information provided by the UT.

Article 370 was scrapped on August 5, 2019. In October 2020, the Union Home Ministry issued a notification saying that any Indian citizen can buy land in municipal areas of Jammu and Kashmir without being a domicile. However, agricultural lands are an exception.

The minister added that a total of 1,559 Indian companies, including multinational companies, have made investments in Kashmir. On the other hand, no company has invested in Ladakh.
