text_fieldsMumbai: Zoya Akhtar's upcoming project, 'The Archies,' has sparked considerable anticipation, particularly due to its ensemble cast featuring newcomers Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Agastya Nanda, Yuvraj Menda, Mihir Ahuja, Vedang Raina, and Dot.
Akhtar recently shed light on her decision to cast fresh faces rather than established A-list actors in the film.
In an interaction with India Today, Zoya Akhtar shared insights into the casting process for 'The Archies.'
She expressed a deliberate intention to feature newcomers in pivotal roles, explaining that the iconic nature of 'The Archies' demanded a fresh approach. Akhtar said that casting renowned actors might bring along their established persona or preconceived notions, whereas new talents offered a clean slate, aligning more authentically with the iconic characters from the comic.
Emphasising the need for authenticity, Akhtar highlighted the necessity for the cast to embody their roles convincingly, specifically aiming for a youthful appearance of 17 years. This crucial element led to the deliberate selection of young and entirely new faces for the film.
Detailing the audition process, Akhtar elaborated on the extensive casting journey. Each actor auditioned for every character, and the selection wasn't solely based on physical attributes but delved into the individual's essence and suitability for the respective character.
'The Archies' revolves around the escapades of popular fictional teenagers, including Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Reggie Mantle, set in the 1960s. The storyline encompasses their adventures in love and friendship while uniting to protect their town, Riverdale, from impending destruction.
The live-action musical movie, produced by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti under Tiger Baby Productions in collaboration with Graphic India and Archie Comics, is slated to premiere on Netflix on December 7.
