SRK's Jawan: Bidding war intensified for OTT rights, Netflix in the lead
text_fieldsMumbai: After Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan became the biggest hit in Bollywood in the recent past, his next film Jawan has become one of the most-anticipated. Now, the race for its OTT rights is intensifying.
Jawan is directed by Tamil director Atlee whose last film Bigil was a blockbuster that collected over Rs 300 crore worldwide. It also stars Nayanthara, Sanjay Dutt, and Vijay Sethupathi. Deepika Padukone is set to make an extended cameo appearance.
The film will hit the theatres on 2 June 2023.
According to a report in Pinkvilla, the bidding war for the digital rights of the film traces back to its universal appeal and the mega-budget spent on it. "Jawan is viewed as a film that can bring in tremendous viewership. The film has a universal appeal, and thanks to mega budgets spent on the scale of the film, it’s expected to be a spectacle." The multi-lingual release is the cherry on the cake.
"Most importantly, it is a multi-lingual film that will penetrate across markets, garnering viewership across the country. In that sense, it’s a true pan-India film with big names from across the nation. It is bound to connect with a wider audience. All of this is a big win for any OTT platform," added the source.
Netflix is leading the bidding war because the OTT platform already has a long-standing relationship with Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment with over 20 titles. The rights of many movies from SRK's production house were renewed by last year and they are likely to be on Netflix for another five years.
