Chennai: The Ponniyin Selvan team has announced a release date for the sequel. Ponniyin Selvan: 2 will be released on 28th April 2023.

Lyca Productions shared a short clip and tweeted: "Let's get those swords in the air as we await the 28th of April 2023! #CholasAreBack #PS1 #PS2#PonniyinSelvan." In the video, actor Vikram (playing Aditya Karikalan - the crown prince) was seen sitting in front of a Kali statue. It also showed glimpses of Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi), and Vandhiyathevan (Karthi). Aishwarya's character was seen sitting in front of a mirror. Jayam Ravi's character was seen walking amid monks. Karthi's character was seen in a forest recovering from his wounds.

Mani Ratnam's magnum opus was one of the most successful Indian movies of 2022. The epic historical adventure drama is based on legendary Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1995 novel.

Ponniyin Selvan: 1 showed the Chola Kingdom grappling with the threat of a coup and explored the life of prince Arulmozhi Varman. It ended with Arulmozhi Varman and Vandhiyathevan getting caught in a storm. The kingdom assumes that he is dead and the sequel is likely to deal with its repercussions.
