Assam CM Sonowals declared assets rise by 71 per cent in 5 years

In an affidavit submitted as the BJP candidate from Majuli for the upcoming Assembly elections, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal declared his total assets worth 3.17 crores, a 71 per cent increase from 1.85 crores he declared in 2016.

While CM's movable assets have increased from 70.44 lakhs in 2016 to 1.14 crores in 2021, his immovable assets have risen from 1.15 crores in the last polls to 2.02 crores this time. However, he hasn't acquired any new immovable assets.

Likewise, the BJP leader's bank deposits have increased three-fold to Rs 38,02,498 from Rs 12,13,320. His insurance policies, at Rs 28,90,794 in 2016 has now risen to Rs 43,26,461

His shares in Oil India Limited, which was worth 8,77,500 in the run-up to the assembly polls of 2016, is currently worth 13,04,697. In the affidavit of both these years, Sonowal declared 30g of gold, household goods worth 1.90 lakhs and no vehicle.

Sonowal owns both inherited and self-acquired agricultural and non-agricultural land in Dibrugarh and Guwahati. While the worth of his self-acquired assets has risen to Rs 96,75,000 in five years from Rs 35,00,000, his inherited property's value increased to Rs 1,06,20,000 from Rs 80,00,000.

The present CM has also declared liabilities worth Rs 27,29,469 this year against the 2,92,000 declared in 2016. However, he has no outstanding government dues, including income, GST, municipality or property taxes. While he declared in-hand cash of Rs 94,597 in 2016, this has fallen to 39,030 in 2021.

Sonowal is contesting from Majuli for the second time this year. He filed his nomination papers on Tuesday. Majuli will face polls in the first phase on March 27th.
