Kuwait foils Hezbollah-linked plot targeting state leaders, arrests six

Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior said Wednesday it had dismantled a Hezbollah-linked cell accused of plotting to assassinate state leaders and senior officials.

In a televised statement, ministry spokesperson Brigadier Nasser Buslaib said State Security Services foiled the plan after extended surveillance, arresting six suspects. The group included five Kuwaiti citizens and one person whose citizenship had recently been revoked.

Authorities identified 14 additional suspects who remain abroad. They include five Kuwaiti citizens, five individuals stripped of citizenship, two Iranians and two Lebanese nationals.

Buslaib said investigations showed the group had links to Hezbollah and had planned assassinations while also recruiting others to carry out such operations. He said the suspects admitted to espionage, joining the organization and preparing to execute assigned missions targeting senior figures.

According to the ministry, members of the cell received military training abroad under Hezbollah leadership, including instruction in weapons and explosives.

The suspects have been referred to the Public Prosecution, while security agencies continue to track others connected to the network.

Buslaib described the activities as a serious act against the state, saying they directly targeted national security and leadership. He added that authorities would take strict legal measures against anyone involved in similar activities.

The announcement follows earlier operations this month. On March 16, authorities said they had arrested 16 people linked to Hezbollah on charges related to recruitment and attempts to destabilize the country. Two days later, officials said they had disrupted another plot targeting key facilities, with ten Kuwaiti citizens detained.

In that case, the ministry said suspects had coordinated with foreign entities and attempted to share coordinates of potential targets.
