New York: United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres said on Saturday that the world should heed Mahatma Gandhi's message of peace and usher in a new era of trust and tolerance, Asian News International reported. Guterres was paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 152nd birthday.

He tweeted that hatred, division and conflict have had their day, and the world should heed Gandhiji's message of peace and commit to building a better future on this International Day of Non-Violence.

The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi- October 2nd- has been celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence since the UN adopted it in June 2007. Several events were held in India and across the globe to mark the occasion.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, adopted a non-violent resistance at the forefront of the freedom struggle against the colonial British. His unwavering belief in 'Swaraj' (self-governance and 'Ahimsa' (non-violence) won accolades worldwide and inspired many as well as won India her independence.
