World is big enough for both countries to thrive: US official on China

Beijing: The US authorities appear to be keen on patching up differences with China before tension between the two nations fueling more discord as the face off continues.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who is among the top officials in recent times to visit China, said on Sunday that her talks with China offered a ‘ surer footing’ in ties, news agency AFP reported.

Her trip to China comes days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit, which showed change of attitude in Washington about its China relations.

Janet Yellen said there is a need for greater exchanges and collaboration, while deeper issues persist between the countries.

‘We believe that the world is big enough for both of our countries to thrive,’ she was quoted as saying in Beijing on Sunday.

Nevertheless President Biden’s growing interest in steadying relation with the world’s second largest economy, her trip has not yielded much in the way of strengthening bilateral ties, according to AFP.

China's official Xinhua news reported that Yellen's meeting with Vice Premier He Lifeng led to an agreement to "strengthen communication and cooperation on addressing global challenges".

And Yellen acknowledged that there are ‘ significant disagreements’ between both nations but confirmed that the talks were ‘direct, substantive, and productive’.

The US- China ties hit hard by Washington’s trade curbs, which it says as part of move to stop China’s access to advance technology ‘ deemed crucial to national security’.

"These actions are motivated by straightforward national security considerations," Yellen reportedly said on Sunday.

Yellen also expressed ‘ serious concerns’ regarding what she said Beijing’s ‘ unfair trade practices’.
