The first lady of Haiti Martine Moise, who was seriously injured in the attack that killed her husband, President JovanelMoise, gave her first interview since the incident. She said that assassins thought she was dead when they left.

Moise told The New York Times that the gunmen ransacked their home looking for the President. She added that they made "cursory efforts" on their way out to see if she was still alive. The couple was woken by the sound of gunfire. And soon the gunmen entered the bedroom.

She said that the 30-50 security personnel posted at their house were not killed or wounded, and wondered what happened to them at the time of the attack. She said that only the oligarchs and the system could kill him (President JovenelMoise), reported AFP.

Haitian police have arrested the head of Jovenel Moise's security and 20 Colombian mercenaries. The police suspect that the attack was organised by a group of Haitians with foreign ties.

She told the New York Times that the assassins spoke only Spanish, not Haiti's languages - Creole and French. Killers were also speaking to someone on the phone during the attack. She added that the group took something from a shelf where the president kept files.

Moise said that she wants the killers to know she is not afraid and is considering running for the presidency after recovering. She added that she would like people who did this to be caught, otherwise they will kill every single president who takes power.

Martine Moise was struck in the hand and elbow. She was rushed to a hospital in the United States for emergency treatment. Since then, she has recovered and spoke to family and diplomats.
