US warns citizens against China travel over the risk of ‘ wrongful detention’
text_fieldsWashington DC: The US State Department advised citizens to reconsider travel to China over the risk of wrongful detention in the nation, CNN reported.
The advisory comes as the US-China relations are at the rock bottom following former Speaker of US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan over which China claims authority.
The advisory sounded much a like a warning of potential health risk during a pandemic.
A previous advisory put mainland China at ‘ Level 3: Reconsider Travel’ destination highlighting the risk of ‘ arbitrary enforcement of local laws’.
The advisory issued in March urged US travellers to ‘ exercise increased caution’ while traveling in the mainland.
A spokesperson for State Department attributed the advisory to Chinese government’s continuing ‘ practice of wrongful detention’ .
Revealing the US authorities' distrust of Chinese government, previous advisories in June and March said ‘The Department of State has determined the risk of wrongful detention of US nationals by the PRC government exists in the PRC.’
It seems US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Beijing last month for improving relations has not made any difference.
This is despite Blinken told a press conference after concluding the visit that the US and China made ‘ progress’ in bringing relations back on track.
Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will travel to China this week as part of stabilizing relations.
