US Supreme Court ties up Biden from controlling carbon emissions
text_fieldsWashington: President Joe Biden no more can issue 'sweeping regulations' to cut down carbon emissions from power plants in the nation.
The US Supreme Court on Thursday placed constraints on the federal government's authority to reduce carbon emission, undermining the President's plans to tackle climate change, according to Reuters.
The ruling will constrain the country's Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) from regulating emissions of greenhouse gases from coal-and gas-fired power plants.
The decision authored by Chief Justice John Roberts has the backing of six conservatives while three liberals dissented, according to the report.
Terming the court's ruling "another devastating decision" President Biden brought to the foreground the Supreme Court's relaxing of restrictions on guns days before.
According to Biden the court's emission ruling risked the country's ability to keep its air clean and fight climate change.
President has directed his legal team to find ways to protect against pollution working with the Justice Department.
The ruling sends the singal, according to the report, that justices would be a major obstacle to implementing policies of national importance.
As well as hamstringing the EPA's ability to issue any regulations on power plants, the decision will limit the administration's ability to curb the power sector's emissions, which form about a quarter of U.S. greenhouse gases.
Earlier a major coal producer led a group of Republican controlled states asking Justices to limit the EPA 's ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants.
