Trump warns of economic depression if Democrats win Congress
text_fieldsUS President Donald Trump has warned that a Democratic victory in the November 3 midterm elections could trigger an economic depression similar to that of 1929, urging voters to keep Republicans in control of Congress.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Corinth, Mississippi, Trump sought to mobilise Republican supporters by promising $5,000 payments to every adult US citizen if his party retains control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
He claimed that tariff revenues and economic growth would fund the proposed payments, estimating the total cost at around $1 trillion. However, he did not explain how the scheme would be implemented or whether it would require congressional approval.
Trump also defended US military operations against Iran, claiming that American forces had severely weakened the country's naval, air and nuclear capabilities. He predicted that the conflict would end soon and energy prices would subsequently fall.
On the domestic front, the President highlighted his administration's tariff policies, claiming they had attracted foreign investment and boosted US manufacturing. He also called for stricter immigration controls, stronger voter identification requirements and tougher penalties for serious crimes.
The rally was held in support of Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who faces Democratic challenger Scott Colom in the upcoming election.
Trump urged supporters not to take Republican victories in traditionally conservative states for granted, acknowledging that the party holding the presidency often loses congressional seats during midterm elections.
The November 3 vote will determine control of both chambers of Congress and influence the administration's ability to advance its legislative agenda.
