Washington: US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Hamas has been given a period of three to four days to respond to his proposed Gaza ceasefire plan.

The plan calls for the militant group to release hostages within that timeframe, disarm completely, and accept exclusion from any future role in government. It also outlines the creation of a transitional authority in Gaza, to be led by Trump himself.

When asked about the deadline, Trump explained that the US was waiting for Hamas to make a decision, adding that if the group refused, the outcome would be a very ‘sad end.’

According to a Palestinian source cited by AFP, Hamas has already begun internal consultations among its political and military leaders, both within Gaza and abroad.

The development follows Trump’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expressed his support for the American peace plan.

During his discussions with Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for the US plan to end the conflict in Gaza, saying it met Israel’s war objectives, TNIE reported.

He warned, however, that if Hamas either rejected the proposal or accepted it only to undermine it later, Israel would move to complete the operation on its own.

The plan itself offers only a vague assurance that Palestinian statehood might be considered at some point in the future. For the time being, Gaza and its population of over two million would be placed under international administration.

Under the proposal, an international security force would be deployed in the territory, while a “Board of Peace,” led by Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, would supervise governance and reconstruction. Israeli forces would continue to surround Gaza.
