Trump fires Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director Rohit Chopra

Palm Beach: President Donald Trump has dismissed Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), in the latest move to remove Biden administration holdovers. Chopra, one of the key regulators from the previous Democratic administration, was among the last remaining officials appointed by former President Obama still holding a position after Trump took office on January 20.
Chopra, who was previously appointed by Trump to serve as a Democratic member of the Federal Trade Commission during his first term, was notified of his termination via email from the White House. A person familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity, confirmed the details but was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Chopra, a strong ally of Senator Elizabeth Warren—one of Trump’s frequent targets—has been credited for holding Wall Street accountable for its treatment of ordinary American families. In a statement, Warren praised Chopra for his leadership in preventing "the de-banking of Americans" and ensuring that consumers, including those excluded from the financial system due to overdraft fees, religious organizations, and conservatives, were protected.
Although Chopra was legally appointed to serve a five-year term as CFPB director, he had previously stated that he would leave the position if asked by the new president.
