Tik Toker in Canada hospitalized after drinking too much water for a fitness challenge
text_fieldsCanada : Doctors in Canada advised a TikToker to consume less than half a litre of water a day.
The woman needed an emergency hospital visit after developing health issues from drinking too much water for a fitness challenge.
Michelle Fairburn was participating the challenge named 75 Hard, initiated by YouTuber Andy Frisella, where she had to drink four litres of water for 75 days, New York Post reported.
The challenge included keeping oneself to strict diet with no alcohol, cheat meals, two 45-minutes workouts a day, reading 10 pages and clicking a daily progress photo.
Just 12 days into the challenge, drinking four litres of water each day, Michelle Fairburn thought she had water poisoning.
‘I think I have water poisoning. I don't feel good at all,’' Fairburn was quoted as saying.
She didn’t feel good and woke up several times through the night to go to bathroom.
She became nauseous and could not eat, feeling weak and was ‘on the toilet all morning’.
Finally it dawned on her that she was drinking ‘excessive amount of water’ and said ‘I don’t know what to do’.
The doctor found her suffering from a severe sodium deficiency.
Contrary to excessive water, doctors advised her to take less than half a litre of water per day, according to the report.
Mayo Clinic earlier reported that extreme sodium deficiency, if untreated, could be life-threatening.
Michelle Fairburn, who acknowledges that excessive consumption water can be fatal from sodium deficiency, however, is not ready to give up the 75 hard challenge.
‘I'm still gonna do the 75 hard challenge, and I'm not gonna give up, but he says I have to drink less than half a liter of water a day. I cannot believe this is actually happening,’ she said reportedly in another video.
Andy Frisella, CEO of a supplement company, created the challenge in 2019 and gave a disclaimer for participants to have a physician’s advice before starting the challenge.
