Taxis in Japan to stop displaying driver's name, photo
text_fieldsTokyo: The Ministry of Transport in Japan has eliminated the mandate for taxi drivers to display their name and photo in their vehicles, according to local media reports on Monday.
This decision, aimed at preventing the online dissemination of taxi drivers' personal details, is designed to establish a secure working atmosphere for drivers and alleviate the labour scarcity in the transportation sector, as cited by the Xinhua news agency quoting public broadcaster NHK.
Taxi drivers used to have to display their photo ID to show that they are the authorised driver and not an impostor.
But there have been cases when dissatisfied passengers took a picture of the driver's ID card without permission and uploaded it to a social networking site, said the NHK report.
Passengers will still be able to identify a vehicle by the driver number or the receipt if they left something behind and need to contact the operator, it added.
This change aims to balance security and convenience for both drivers and passengers.
