Five Sri Lankan fishermen tragically passed away after consuming the contents of a bottle they found floating in the sea, according to Navy Spokesman Captain Gayan Wickramasuriya.

The incident involved a six-man crew that had set sail from Tangalle Fisheries Harbour.

The fishermen discovered the bottle approximately 320 nautical miles off the coast and, believing its contents to be alcohol, decided to consume it. Unfortunately, by Sunday afternoon, five of the men had died.

Captain Wickramasuriya reported that the sole survivor is in critical condition and is currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
