South Korea indicts impeached President Yoon over martial law: Reports

Seoul: South Korean prosecutors have indicted the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol in connection with his controversial imposition of martial law last month, according to news reports.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office charged Yoon on Sunday with rebellion tied to his December 3 decree, which triggered widespread political upheaval in the country. The indictment, first reported by Yonhap news agency, has been echoed by other South Korean media outlets. Efforts to reach the prosecutors' office for comments remained unanswered.

Yoon was previously impeached and arrested following the declaration of martial law. The Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on whether to formally remove him from office or reinstate him as president.

The conservative leader has firmly denied any wrongdoing, defending martial law as a legitimate governance measure. Yoon asserted that it aimed to highlight the risks posed by the liberal-controlled National Assembly, which he accused of obstructing his agenda and impeaching key officials.

In his martial law proclamation, Yoon referred to the National Assembly as “a den of criminals” and vowed to eliminate “shameless North Korea followers and anti-state forces.”

The imposition of martial law and its subsequent fallout have plunged South Korea into a political crisis, with intense public scrutiny of Yoon's and the legislative body's actions.
