Social media buzz reignites fascination in Nepal's ancient 'Mustang Caves'

Kathmandu: A recent social media post has sparked renewed interest in Nepal's enigmatic Mustang Caves, also referred to as "Sky Caves."
Nestled within the Mustang district of Nepal, these approximately 10,000 ancient caves cling to cliff faces, soaring about 150 feet above the valley floor.
Their inaccessibility has long veiled the mysteries of these dwellings, accessible only to seasoned climbers and adventurous explorers.
The Mustang region, often likened to the mythical valley of Shangri-La, is situated high in the Himalayas on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. Despite becoming part of Nepal in the 18th century, Mustang has retained its traditional Tibetan culture in isolation. Formerly known as the independent Kingdom of Lo, Mustang, or Upper Mustang, boasts a high-altitude desert with vibrant red and ocher landscapes, deep gorges, and expansive blue skies.
Limited access to the region for travellers was granted in 1991.
For centuries, ascetics following the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism have roamed Mustang's valleys, utilising the caves for advanced tantric yoga practices. The deep gorges provide an ideal backdrop for practising tummo, a Tibetan breathing technique enabling individuals to generate heat at high altitudes or address negative emotions.
Visitors can embark on hikes along narrow cliffs, entering caves to absorb the serene atmosphere and breathtaking views of the sky and mountains. While many caves remain empty, some house frescoes and statues. Certain cave entrances are locked and require unlocking by a caretaker from a nearby village. Once a vibrant hub of Buddhist scholarship and art, Mustang's temples boast remarkable Tibetan art.
