Shanghai residents rebel against the Zero Covid policy and break out of their homes
text_fieldsChina's draconian Zero Covid policy is starting to fail as residents of Shanghai staged a breakout from their own homes. The communist officials had forced people to stay inside as part of the efforts to eradicate Covid-19.
Videos on social media showed metal fences built along a residential street to trap people in their homes. As part of the rebellion, people broke down the fences and walked on the streets.
While the rest of the world is trying to live with coronavirus, the Chinese government has been stubbornly sticking to its Zero Covid policy. Experts have been repeatedly warning that the Omicron variant makes it impossible to contain cases using the lockdown method.
According to Daily Mail, Shanghai reported 15,000 cases on Thursday. Capital Beijing is also preparing to go into lockdown. President Xi Jinping on Friday said that he is committed to the Zero Covid policy. China is keeping international borders mostly shut, and entire cities are closed off to anything but essential travel.
