Restrictions on media undermine Pakistan's progress: Blinken

Washington: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken picked out Pakistan over its poor press freedom, saying restrictions on press undermine the nation's image and progress.
Antony Blinken was at a press briefing on the world Press Freedom Day when he said US State Department was aware of the restrictions on media outlets in Pakistan.
US Secretary of State said the issue was being highlighted to Pakistani counterparts, according to IANS.
His comments came after a Pakistani journalist asked about Pakistan still being figured among the countries that are most dangerous for journalists.
"Has the State Department ever taken up this issue in bilateral talks with the Pakistani authorities?" the journalist was quoted as asking to Antony Blinken.
There is a backdrop of the question. Last year many journalists in Pakistan were killed, kidnapped, tortured for exposing crime, corruption as well as criticizing government policies.
Antony Blinken said the issue was taken up in its engagements with Pakistani counterparts.
He also conceded as being aware of "significant' restrictions on media and civil society in Pakistan.
Earlier a report on World Press Freedom Index by media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders showed Pakistan sliding from 147 th position last year to 157th this year.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also highlighted the importance of free media and termed it the future of any nation, saying, "A vibrant free press, an informed citizenry is key for any nation and its future, including Pakistan," the report said.
