Putin open to peace talks in Ukraine, stays firm on Russia’s objectives

Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open to negotiating peace in Ukraine, but Russia is firmly focused on achieving its stated objectives, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview broadcast on state television.
Peskov emphasised that President Putin has “repeatedly spoken of his desire to bring the Ukrainian settlement to a peaceful conclusion as soon as possible,” adding that while peace is a priority, the process is complex and demands significant effort. “This is a long process, it requires effort, and it is not easy,” he said.
“The main thing for us is to achieve our goals. Our goals are clear,” Peskov asserted, underlining that Russia’s strategic interests remain unchanged.
He also commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest remarks on the Russia-Ukraine war, describing Trump’s rhetoric as “harsh” but familiar. Despite the tone, Peskov noted that Trump “underscored in comments on Russia that he would continue to search for a peace deal.”
Trump, on Monday, declared a more aggressive approach toward Moscow, announcing expanded military assistance to Ukraine, including the supply of Patriot missile defense systems.
He also issued a 50-day deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face increased sanctions.
