London: Large crowds tried to break police lines in order to storm the Iranian Embassy in London on Sunday, according to Associated Press.

They threw rocks at police echoing the widespread protests in Iran against the death in Iranian police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16.

She had been arrested by Iran's morality police for allegedly breaking headscarf rules, triggering protests that spread across at least 46 cities, towns and villages in Iran.

The Iranian police claimed she died of a heart attack but her family remains unconvinced pointing their fingers at police.

The protesters in London have been gathering outside the Knightsbridge compound all week while thousands of women in Iran simultaneously have stormed the streets.

Five protesters in London were arrested amid reports of a number of police officers having been injured in the skirmishes.

London's Metropolitan Police said reinforcement had been called in when "a substantial group" of crowds tried to break police lines "intent on causing disorder", by storming towards the embassy.

Britain and Iran are at odds over the death in custody of Amini and the protests in London comes in the midst of the hostility.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry reportedly summoned the UK's ambassador to Iran Simon Shercliff on Sunday protesting the hosting of critical Farsi-language media outlets, according to AP.

Iran called the news agencies' reporting an interference in Iran's internal affairs and against its sovereignty.
