The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Pillay the prize on October 9, 2026, for her lifelong "efforts to promote peace and international law".
Navanethem Pillai, the Indian origin winner was born in Durban, South Africa. She had advocated vigorously the anti-apartheid movement in her country (along with Nelson Mandela) early in her career.
Pillai also served as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Court (ICC). She acted as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
She chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Pillay's judicial career also demonstrated how domestic legal struggles against discrimination and repression could inform the development of international standards of accountability.
The Nobel Peace Prize of 2026 carries a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor (approx. $1.2 million USD), which will be handed over at the formal ceremony scheduled for December 10, 2026, in Oslo, Norway.
