N Korea to crack down on officials' "unsound and non-revolutionary acts"

Seoul: North Korean administration decided to crack down on officials who "unsound and non-revolutionary acts" abusing their power, PTI reported citing state media, which added that the nation's leader is "looking for greater unity" to hop over the Covid-19 outbreak and economic hurdles.

But it was not clarified by the Sunday's Workers' Party meeting what the mentioned acts were.

But it is for sure that the move is another attempt by the dictator to reinforce his control over his population so that he could face the domestic hardships united.

In the discussion between Kim and senior party secretaries, it is stated that "waging a more intensive struggle against unsound and non-revolutionary acts including abuse of power and bureaucratism revealed among some party officials," Korean Central News Agency, the state media, reported.

Kim ordered the local discipline supervision systems to promote the party's "monolithic leadership" and "the broad political activities of the party through the strong discipline system," the media reported.

Earlier in the past two years, the N Korean leader had urged fighting against "anti-socialist practices" while the nation struggled with a weak economy, which was further depressed again by the pandemic-induced slowdown and UN sanctions. His mismanagement of national affairs also hit the nation hard.

The new restrictions on movement in the country will put further strain on it.

North Korea, on May 12, admitted the omicron variant of the coronavirus had infected people, and it subsequently has said about 4.5 million people, "more than 17% of its 26 million people" have fallen ill with fevers, and only 72 have died. Foreign experts widely doubt the outbreak was North Korea's first, and they believe the statistics being disclosed in state media are manipulated to prevent political damage to Kim while bolstering internal control and promoting his leadership.

During a Workers' Party conference last week, Kim claimed the pandemic situation has passed the stage of "serious crisis" and ordered officials to remedy "the shortcomings and evils in the anti-epidemic work" and take steps to build up the country's anti-pandemic capability.
