Washington: US President Donald Trump's trade advisor, Peter Navarro has called India the 'Maharaja' of tariffs alongside warning that if New Delhi did not ‘come around’ for trade negotiations at some point, it would not ‘end well’ for the country.

In an interview with the 'Real America's Voice' show, Navarro again pointed to India’s continued buying of Russian oil saying that before Ukraine war New Delhi had never bought Russian oil ‘except for like little tiny drops of it’.

Claiming that ‘Russian refiners coming on to Indian soil and profiteering’, Navarro added that American taxpayers are paying more money for the conflict happening in Ukraine.

The US officials reportedly pointed out that India began to rely on Russian oil in 2022 after the Group of Seven (G-20) nations imposed a $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil to limit the country’s oil revenue in response to invasion of Ukraine, just as ensuring global oil supply with India buying discounted oil from Russia.

Trump’s adviser claimed that the European Union, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Indonesia signed ‘great’ trade deals with the US upon realizing that they needed American market and were taking too much advantage of the country.

‘I think India must come around at some point. And if it doesn't, it's lying down with Russia and China, and that won't end well for India,’ he warned.

Further pressing India to stop buying Russian oil, Navarro said ‘We're walking a fine line here with all of this. I think that what's got to happen is India's got to stop buying Russian oil. That's going to be good for the whole peace; the road to peace partly runs through New Delhi’.

Calling member countries of BRICS alliance as ‘vampires’, he said the unfair trade practices of these countries are affecting America, adding that none of the countries in the alliance will survive ‘if they don't sell to the United States’.
