Tehran: Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that it launched a missile strike on the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf region, in what Tehran described as a retaliatory response to the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran said the attack was part of “Operation True Promise 4,” which it described as a direct response to the killing of Khamenei in what it alleged was a joint US-Israeli strike. According to Iranian officials, four ballistic missiles directly hit the aircraft carrier. The US Department of Defense has not officially confirmed the claim. However, the US military has reportedly been placed on high alert amid rising tensions.

The alleged strike marks a significant escalation in hostilities and raises the possibility of a broader regional conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Separately, Iranian missile attacks on Israel resulted in civilian casualties. According to a report by The Times of Israel, nine people were killed in a ballistic missile strike in the city of Beit Shemesh.

An Iranian missile struck a residential area, hitting a public bomb shelter and damaging a synagogue and surrounding homes. Eight fatalities were confirmed initially, with a ninth body later recovered from beneath the rubble during search operations.

Beit Shemesh Mayor Samuel Greenberg said 20 people remained missing as rescue efforts continued. Deputy Commissioner Avshalom Peled, head of the Jerusalem District Police, stated that most of those killed had been inside shelters when the missile struck.

The Iranian offensive followed a warning from Ali Larijani, a former officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Larijani had cautioned that the United States and Israel would face a level of force “they had never experienced before.”

With military forces on alert and civilian casualties mounting, the developments signal a rapidly deteriorating security situation in the region. The scale of the reported strike on a US aircraft carrier, if confirmed, would represent one of the most serious direct confrontations between Iran and the United States in recent history, intensifying fears of a wider war across the Middle East.
