Iran imposes retaliatory sanctions on Britain, EU

Tehran: In response to similar actions taken against Tehran over its response to months-long protests, Iran on Tuesday imposed sanctions on 36 people and organisations from the European Union and Britain.
Tehran placed the names on its “sanction list for supporting terrorism and terrorist groups” as well as for “interference in domestic affairs... fomenting violence and unrest,” the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement, AFP reported.
At the national level and in the European Parliament, sanctions were put in place against a number of military corporations as well as ministers and politicians from different European nations.
These include Renata Alt from Germany and Frederique Ries from Belgium, as well as Isabelle Rome, France's minister for equality and diversity.
According to the foreign ministry, the restrictions include the "prohibition of visa issuance and entry" and the "blocking of accounts and transactions in Iran's banks."
As part of targeting 32 people and two entities, the EU imposed asset freezes and visa bans on Iran's education and culture ministers on Monday. This was the fifth round of sanctions since the start of the nationwide protests.
When Mahsa Amini, 22, died while being held in detention on September 16 as a result of her arrest for allegedly breaking the dress code for women, Iran has been shaken by protests.
In retaliation for similar actions the EU and UK had taken, Tehran last month placed sanctions on 34 individuals and businesses from those two countries.
