Indian-American legal expert Anjali Chaturvedi nominated for key position: President Biden

WASHINGTON: Legal expert Anjali Chaturvedi is the latest among Indian-Americas to be nominated by the US President Joe Biden to a key position in the administration. She was nominated as General Counsel in the veterans affairs department.

According to the White House website, Chaturvedi is a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and has been nominated for General Counsel, US Department of Veterans Affairs.

The core vision of the department is to offer veterans with the world-class benefits and services they have earned and to do so by conforming to the highest standards of compassion, commitment, excellence, professionalism, integrity, accountability, and stewardship.

Throughout her career, Chaturvedi has worked in three branches of government and private practice. Before her return to government service, Chaturvedi was the Assistant General Counsel and Director of Investigations at the Northrop Grumman Corporation and led the company's global investigations team.

Chaturvedi has previously served as Assistant General Counsel at British Petroleum and as a partner in Nixon Peabody's Washington DC Law Firm. She worked as a federal prosecutor before entering private practice.

While working at the Justice Department, she served both in the District of Columbia and the Northern District of California US Attorneys' Offices, including as Deputy Chief of the Felony Trial Section and Chief of the Organised Crime Strike Force, and detail as Counsel to Senator Dianne Feinstein on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Her legal career began with her clerking for the Honourable Gregory E.Mize of the District of Columbia Superior Court. As an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and Hastings College of Law, Chaturvedi also taught trial advocacy and criminal procedure.

A first-generation American, Chaturvedi was born in Cortland, New York. She graduated from the Georgetown University Law School and Cornell University and is also a certified yoga teacher and leadership coach. Currently, along with her husband and son, she lives in Chevy Chase.

Indian-American scientist Dr Arti Prabhakar, in a 'historic' decision, was nominated by Biden on Tuesday as a top science advisor to the US President, according to PTI.

The previous week, Indian-American security expert Radha Iyengar was nominated to the top Pentagon position by the administration.

A statement by the White House read that Gautam Rana, an Indian-American career diplomat is to be nominated as the new US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Slovakia.

In April, Indian-American diplomat Rachna Sachdeva Korhonen was nominated by Biden as his envoy to Mali, making this the third nomination of an Indian-American in over a month.

In March, diplomat Puneet Talwar was nominated as the country's ambassador to Morocco and political activist Shefali Razdan Duggal as his envoy to the Netherlands.
