New Delhi: While the world is all set to welcome 2024 and celebrations are about to start in India, the new year 2024 arrived in two countries. The New Year arrived first in the central Pacific island nation of Kiribati, around 3.30 pm Indian time on Sunday. Kiribati is a country that is adjacent to the International Date Line. New Year was arrived in New Zealand after Kiribati. The islands are filled with fireworks and colourful displays, kicking off the festivities.

After New Zealand, countries including Australia and Japan will enter the New Year. Later, countries like China and India reach the fresh year. In the Pacific Ocean, American Samoa and Baker Island, which are part of the US, will be the last to celebrate New Year.

New Year comes first in the islands immediately west of the International Date Line and comes last in countries immediately east of the line. The International Date Line is a globally accepted fictitious line used to coordinate the world's time, established in 1884. It passes through the mid-Pacific Ocean and roughly follows a 180-degree-longitude north-south line on the Earth. It is located halfway around the world from the prime meridian — the 0 degrees longitude line in Greenwich, England.
