Hyderabad: A 22 year old Hyderabad native drowned after saving three friends at Toledo Bend Reservoir in Texas on Friday, May 29, authorities said.

Anurup Reddy Koduru, who had recently graduated from the University of North Texas, was swimming with friends when he noticed them struggling and went to their aid. He successfully helped the three to safety but became entangled in a fishing net and was swept under by strong currents. Rescue teams later recovered his body from about 20 feet under the water.

Sabine Parish Sheriff Aaron Mitchell confirmed the victim was a Denton, Texas resident. Multiple agencies — including the South Sabine Fire District, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, North Sabine Fire District, Sabine River Authority, Acadian Ambulance, Life Air Rescue and the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office dive team — took part in the search and recovery operation.

Koduru’s brother, Ashrit, has launched a fundraiser to cover the high costs of repatriating the body to Hyderabad for the last rites. The family said they are “absolutely devastated” and appealed for support to complete international repatriation and legal formalities.

The Indian Consulate in Houston offered condolences on X and said it was in touch with the family to provide assistance.
