How Europe is cooked in the heat waves that flare up: report

Europe is a dream destination for the rest of the world, especially people living in tropical regions known for their extreme heat.

What with cool climate that comes with puffy snow, Europe is a picture post card with greenish fields and esplanades. Of course this is not about cities out there, since cities can be just cities world over.

Things are changing fast as a report suggests, the region experienced sharper temperature rise than any continent in the last three decades.

Simply put, the picture postcard has caught fire and is sending up heat.

The State of the Climate in Europe report, produced jointly with the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, says that rising heat, wildfires, floods, and other climate change impacts will affect society, economies, and ecosystems.

The report follows the record breaking heatwave that affected the UK and thinned out the Apline glaciers, while warming up the waters of Mediterranean, according to a report in India Today.

As many as 30 metres of the Alpine glaciers were lost to warming temperatures from 1997 to 2021, the report details.

The ice sheet melting in Greeland alongside caused the rise of sea levels.

Despite these serious fallouts of climate change, Europe successfully managed greenhouse gas emissions lowering to 31 per cent between 1990 and 2020, while aiming 55 percent cut in 2030.

One expert is of the view that Europe can still play a key role in achieving a carbon-neutral society to meet the Paris agreement.

The question remains how Europe is going to manage the energy crisis from Russia and Ukraine conflict, without turning to traditional coal—yes, you know only too well how stressful coal is to climate.
