Colombo: Shortly after the resignation of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Supreme Court barred his two brothers from leaving the country until July 28, sources said.

Former Prime Minister Mahindra Rajapaksa and former minister Basil Rajapaksa were banned from leaving the island nation that is in the midst of its worst economic crisis.

The court passed the interim order while hearing a petition filed by Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) and three others against the two politicians.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was earlier sworn in as Sri Lanka's interim president until parliament elects a successor to Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who resigned amid protests against his government's mismanagement of the country's bankrupt economy.

A statement from the prime minister's office said that 73-year-old Wickremesinghe took oath as the acting president of Sri Lanka before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
