Global Sumud Flotilla’s second mission departs Barcelona for Gaza
text_fieldsBarcelona: The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) launches its second mission from Barcelona on Sunday, 12 April, to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid by sea.
Led by international activists and NGOs, the flotilla comprises around 70 boats and nearly 1,000 volunteers from 70 countries – a major expansion from its September 2025 voyage.
Organisers aim to spotlight Gaza’s dire conditions and advocate for a humanitarian corridor. Flotilla spokesperson Pablo Castilla stated the mission condemns “international complicity” and demands accountability, while enabling aid delivery by sea and land. He highlighted how global attention on Gaza has waned amid regional tensions involving Iran and Lebanon.
This year’s effort includes Greenpeace and Open Arms, with support from Barcelona’s municipality. It involves coordination with civil society, legal experts, maritime specialists, and media professionals to adhere to international norms.
The flotilla’s prior attempt ended in interception in international waters, with participants detained and deported, organisers report. They also cited communication disruptions during the operation.
Israel has blockaded Gaza since 2007. The territory faces acute humanitarian challenges – including mass displacement, wrecked infrastructure, and shortages of essentials – stemming from the war that erupted in October 2023. The mission seeks to refocus global scrutiny and press for reliable aid access.
