Hiroshima: G7 appealed to the world for the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and added that it would hold discussions over the same this year. It said that the world must urgently assess the impact of the technology, Agence France-Presse reported.

The G7, a group of seven leading powers who met in Hiroshima, said that it would set up a working group to deal with a range of issues in the AI tech field, from copyright to disinformation.

After the advent of text generation tools such as ChatGPT, image creators and music composed used AI, there were delight, alarm and legal battles as well, cropped up as creators accused them of copying material and breaching intellectual property rights.

Worldwide, there is a hassle of governments trying to mitigate the risks, while the chief executive of ChatGPT's owner, OpenAI, recently requested US legislators to regulate AIs.

G7, in its statement, said that the powers recognise the need to immediately stock the opportunities and challenges of generative AI.

A working group will hold discussions on topics such as governance, safeguarding of intellectual property rights, information manipulation, and responsible use of AI.

"We recognise the need to immediately take stock of the opportunities and challenges of generative AI, which is increasingly prominent across countries and sectors," AFP quoted the G7 statement.

"We task-relevant ministers to establish the Hiroshima AI process, through a G7 working group, in an inclusive manner... for discussions on generative AI by the end of this year," it said.

"These discussions could include topics such as governance, safeguard of intellectual property rights including copyrights, promotion of transparency, response to foreign information manipulation, including disinformation, and responsible utilisation of these technologies," it added..

Also, the new working group will be a cooperative venture of G7 with the OECD group of developed countries and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).

G7 said that besides AI, all emerging technologies, including immersive metaverses, must continue to be in line with the shared democratic values of G7. The said values include fairness, respect for privacy and protection from online harassment, hate and abuse, etc.
