Paris: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to one year in prison and two years' probation after being found guilty of corruption and abuse of power. Sarkozy, now 66, was president of France from 2007 to 2012. The case pertains to his attempt in 2014 to gather information from the senior magistrate on the legal proceedings of a case in which he is accused.

This is the first time in the history of modern France that a former president has been tried and convicted in a corruption case. The Paris court also informed that Sarkozy could apply for house arrest while wearing an electronic bracelet. Sarkozy, along with 13 others, is due to face another trial later this month on charges of money laundering during the 2012 presidential election.
