Flights from Kandahar Airport cancelled after Taliban hit runways
cancel

The Taliban has hit the Kandahar Airport with three rockets overnight. Two of them hit the runway, due to which all flights from the airport were cancelled. The airbase is crucial to provide the logistics and air support needed to keep the Taliban out. Kandahar is Afghanistan's second-biggest city.

Airport Chief Massoud told AFP that at least three rockets were fired at the airport as the Taliban is continuing to take control over Afghanistan. He added that the runways are being repaired and the airport is expected to be operational later on Sunday.

The Taliban has been attacking the outskirts of Kandahar for weeks. The province capital is under fear of captivity by the terror organisation. Two other provincial capitals - Herat in the west and LashkarGah in the south are closer to being captured by militants.

If the Taliban takes over any of the major cities, the Afghan government and Army will have to face fuel concerns. The militants will also have certain advantages on the battlefield. The terror organisation has been focusing on provincial capitals and strategic border crossings in recent weeks, reported AFP.

The US military being in the final stages of withdrawal from Afghan soil has given significant advantages to the Taliban, particularly in less populated rural areas. The government has been dismissing the claims of the Taliban's steady territorial gains.
