text_fieldsSeveral people were killed and others sustained injuries after an explosion ripped through a bar in the Swiss ski resort town of Crans-Montana, the BBC reported.
Police said the blast occurred at around 1.30 am local time on New Year’s Eve at the Constellation Bar. A police spokesperson was quoted by Swiss news outlet Blick as saying that more than 100 people were inside the bar when the explosion took place.
A police spokesperson stated that the Majority of casualties are tourists who were in Crans-Montana for the holiday season.
The BBC reported that unverified video footage circulating on social media appeared to show a bar engulfed in flames during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Police said a helpline had been set up for the families of those affected, Indian Express reported.
While Blick suggested that the fire may have been triggered by fireworks during a New Year’s Eve concert, Swiss police said the exact cause of the explosion was still unknown.
Police and firefighters, as well as multiple helicopters, were dispatched to the location. According to authorities, the area has been fully closed off, and a no-fly zone has been enforced over Crans-Montana.
Crans-Montana is a high-end ski resort located about two hours from the Swiss capital, Bern.
