Did Pelosi mean it when she called China the freest society?
text_fieldsIn her first interview after coming home from a visit to Taiwan, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a slip of tongue as she called China "one of the freest societies in the world".
However many on social doubted it a slip of tongue asking whether she meant it when she called a China a freest society.
When interviewed on NBC's 'TODAY' show, Pelosi put her weight behind the 'one China' policy alongside making the gaffe about China's society.
Pelosi said in the interview "We still support the 'one China' policy, we go there to acknowledge the status quo is what our policy is, there is nothing disruptive about that. It was only about saying, China is one of the freest societies in the world, don't take it from me, that's from Freedom House, it's a strong democracy, courageous people"
Pelosi's deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill quickly took to twitter to confirm her stance on China saying the Speaker was referring to Taiwan, not China.
Hammill also said that Pelosi's record of speaking against Chinese communist Party for 35 years in the Congress is unsurpassed.
Pelosi referred to Freedom House when she called China the freest society but DC-based nonprofit does not list China as a free country, instead called it an 'authoritarian regime'.
China took offence to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, starting off the biggest military drill near Taiwan.
