Congolese woman kidnapped, raped and made to eat human flesh: UN Security Council heard

United Nations: She went to pay ransom to the militant group CODECO to release a family member, when she was first kidnapped by the group.

The members of the militant group in Democratic Republic of Congo repeatedly raped and physically abused her, a Congolese rights group told the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Julienne Lusenge, who is the president of women's rights group Female Solidarity for Integrated Peace and Development (SOFEPADI), narrated to the 15-member council the harrowing story of the woman, whose name was not given.

The UN Security Council that met here heard her story as part of its regular briefing on trouble-torn Congo where in May bouts of violence started again.

Julienne Lusenge told the Security Council the more horrifying details of the woman's suffering at the hands of the militants.

They slit a man's throat and pulled out his entrails which they asked her to cook in two water containers. Afterwards they fed all prisoners human flesh.

After they were done with her, they released her and as she was trying to return home another militia group kidnapped her.

This time too, members of the group repeatedly raped her before asking her to cook and eat human flesh—eventually she escaped and narrated her story to Lusenge' rights group SOFEPADI.

Lusenge, however, did not give the name of the second militia group that rapped this woman.

The violence that the militant group CODECO involved in Congo's mineral-rich east for land and resource has killed thousands, displacing millions over the past decade, according to the report.
