British PM Boris Johnson cancels India visit amid Covid surge
cancel

London: As coronavirus situation is worsening in the country, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has cancelled his planned visit to India next week ,Downing Street said on Monday.

"In the light of the current coronavirus situation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be able to travel to India next week." said a statement issued by Downing Street.

"Instead, Prime Ministers Modi and Johnson will speak later this month to agree and launch their ambitious plans for the future partnership between the UK and India. They will remain in regular contact beyond this, and look forward to meeting in person later this year," the statement added.

This comes as pressure has been mounting on the Prime Minister to call off the physical meet as UK Opposition Labour Party has asked Johnson to cancel his visit to India, followed by Public Health England (PHE)report that stated 77 cases of the so-called double mutant Indian variant have been detected in the UK since last month.

However, Ministry of External Affairs of India in its statement said that the decision made by mutual agreement.
