Bangladesh lifts ban on Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, its students wing

Dhaka: The Bangladesh government has revoked the ban imposed on the Jamaat-e-Islami by the previous government. The ban was lifted by the interim government led by Prime Minister Prof Muhammad Yunus.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the student wing Islami Chhattra Shibir and related organizations were banned by the government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled the country following the student uprising.

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that Bangladesh is made up of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and other religious minorities and that this nation is made up of all of us. He was speaking at a press conference in Dhaka after the ban was lifted.

“Politics will determine the course of our country. We all have tried from our respective positions to address the aspirations of the people. But I want to say respectfully that so far we did not succeed in addressing those challenges,” he said. Jamaat-e-Islami Amir also praised the freedom fighters who freed Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order lifting the ban. The order said that no link was found between terrorism and Jamaat-E-Islami Bangladesh, its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and all other associate units of the organization, which was the reason given for the ban.
