Marseille: Iconic French author Dominique Lapierre died at age 91, his wife announced on Sunday.

Dominique Conchon-Lapierre told a French publication she is "at peace and serene since Dominique is no longer suffering", according to news agency AFP.

Lapierre, author of several besting novels including the 1985 'The City of Joy', loved India a lot.

The author expressed his passion for India by donating hefty royalties from the novel based on painful life of a rickshaw puller in Kolkata to support humanitarian projects in India.

Collaborating with American author Larry Collins, Lapierre brought out six books that sold 50 million copies around the world.

The most famous output of this literary collaboration is "Is Paris Burning?" which chronicled the events leading to August 1944, when Nazi Germany surrendered control of Paris.

Born on July 30, 1931, in Chatelaillon, he arrived in the US with his father who was a diplomat.

Soon he would embark on eventful life travel, writing and cars alongside working often a mail box painter for earning his keep.

Collins and Lapierre notable books including "Or I'll Dress You in Mourning" (1968), "O Jerusalem" (1972), "Freedom at Midnight" (1975), "The Fifth Horseman" (1980), and along with the thriller "Is New York Burning?"

Lapierre lived near Collins in Saint-Tropez for a long time across from a tennis court.
