New York: Alaska Airlines said it would continue cancel flights through the first half of the week after announcing grounding of 170 flights on Sunday.

The airlines already announced to cancel a further 60 on Monday, causing fewer flights.

It comes after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directed to ground 171 Boeing 737 MAX 9 airplanes for inspections, Reuters reported.

The Seattle-based carrier with 65 737 MAX 9 aircraft said cancellation on Sunday affected 25,000 passengers.

The FAA directed to ground 171 Boeing jets after an eight-week-old Alaska Airlines jet made an emergency landing having found a gap in the fuselage.

Pilots returned and landed safely back in Portland Oregon after a door plug tore off the left side of the jet.

There were 171 passengers and six crew on board.

The agency on Sunday stated that the flight will ‘remain grounded until the FAA is satisfied that they are safe.’
