Coastal regions of Chile are on high alert after a powerful earthquake struck the Drake Passage, raising the risk of tsunami waves.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Hawaii, the 8.0-magnitude quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

The center said this has created the potential for hazardous tsunami waves to reach parts of Chile’s coastline within the next three hours.

“The center advised people in the areas at risk to stay alert for information from authorities,” the statement added.

The Drake Passage connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, making the quake’s location significant for coastal nations.

This seismic event follows closely on the heels of another powerful earthquake in Russia’s Far East just weeks ago. That quake generated a tsunami that spread across the Pacific, prompting alerts in Japan, the US, Canada, and New Zealand. While waves up to four meters hit parts of Russia, other regions reported only minor damage.

Authorities in Chile are closely monitoring the situation as precautionary measures are put in place for communities along the coast.
