U19 World Boxing Championships: India brings home 17 medals
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Indian boxers put on an impressive performance at the U19 World Boxing Championships held in Colorado, USA, securing a total of 17 medals, including 10 for girls and 7 for boys. This significant medal count was highlighted by the contributions of 11 Khelo India Athletes (KIAs), of which eight are SAI National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) trainees.The medallists also included three NCOE trainees who are non-KIAs, all training out of NCOE Rohtak.
The athletes from NCOE Rohtak contributed significantly to the medal tally, winning a total of 10 medals: 2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze. Additionally, NCOE Aurangabad added 1 gold medal to the overall count.
Gold medalists Hemant Sangwan (men’s 90kg), Parthavi Grewal (women’s 65kg), Krisha Verma (women’s 75kg), and Vanshika Goswami (women’s +80kg) were at the forefront of India's success.
Meanwhile, the Indian women's team contributed significantly, taking home three golds and seven silvers. Parthavi delivered an impressive performance, winning the women’s 65kg final with a dominant 5-0 victory over Aaliyah Hoppema from the Netherlands. Vanshika also had a strong showing, emerging victorious in the women’s +80kg category against Germany’s Victoria Gatt, winning by Referee Stops Contest (RSC) just one minute and 37 seconds into the match.
In the men's category, Hemant secured India’s only gold medal, triumphing with a 4-1 split decision victory over Rishon Sims from the USA in the 90kg division. Meanwhile, Nisha (51kg), Supriya Devi Thokchom (54kg), and Kritika Wasan (80kg) each finished their finals with silver medals.
The outstanding performance of the Indian boxers highlights their hard work and dedication in the sport.
