Zomato fires workers across departments as co-founder quits

New Delhi: Close on the heels of layoffs happening in the tech world, Food delivery app Zomato is cutting 3 per cent of its workforce.

Employees across departments are going to be impacted by the latest bouts of job loss happening over a couple of weeks in many IT companies.

A person with knowledge of the situation told Livemint that employees in departments including technology, product and marketing are being affected.

A spokesperson for Zomato termed the layoffs as part of "regular performance-based churn".

"There has been a regular performance-based churn of under 3 per cent of our workforce; there's nothing more to it," the spokesperson said.

The latest layoffs at Zomato follow the firing of around 520 employees that make up 13 per cent of its workforce in 2020.

Back then raging covid caused a downturn in business with many companies trimming their workforce before the market picked up momentum again.

Zomato has around 3,800 employees even after the most recent layoffs.

Meanwhile, reports said Zomato co-founder Mohit Gupta stepped down without revealing the reason for quitting.

Zomato founder and chief executive Deepinder Goyal called Mohit Gupta a friend of his over the last few years.

Further, he said that " You have done a tremendous job here, brought us back from the brink of extinction, scaled the business to new heights, got us to profitability, and above all, coached me over the years to become capable of running such a large and complex business."

Two top officials to quit Zomato following wide layoffs include Rahul Ganjoo (former head of Intercity Legends service) and Siddharth Jhawar (former head of Intercity Legends service).
