WhatsApp may introduce 'close friends status' feature similar to Instagram: report
text_fieldsWhatsApp is working on a new feature that would allow users to share Status updates with a selected group of contacts through a Close Friends option, similar to a feature already available on Instagram, according to a report by WABetaInfo.
The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.5.13 and is still under development. While there is no official timeline for its release, it is expected to be made available to beta testers before a wider rollout.
The reported feature is aimed at giving users greater control over who can see their Status updates, allowing them to share personal content with a smaller circle without repeatedly changing privacy settings. WhatsApp has been developing custom contact lists for Status updates, and the Close Friends list appears to be an extension of that effort.
Users are expected to be able to create and manage their Close Friends list either through Status privacy settings or directly from the Status screen. Changes to the list would apply only to future Status updates.
According to the report, contacts added to the Close Friends list will see a different coloured ring around the user’s profile picture when viewing a Status update. This visual indicator would signal that the update was shared privately and confirm that the viewer is part of the Close Friends list.
Separately, a recent report said WhatsApp is also developing an optional subscription plan that could offer features such as premium stickers, themes, and additional chat pinning options.
