New York: After Google announced major job cuts, the tech giant’s CEO Sundar Pichai said he had consulted the company's founders and board before deciding on layoffs.

Sundar Pichai reportedly told employees during an internal meeting on Monday that 6 percent job cuts were made after the company’s growth slowed.

The CEO of Google parent Alphabet Inc. also said acting not decisively and early could compound the problem making it much worse.

Google reported on Friday about eliminating around 12,000 jobs, becoming the latest tech giant to add to massive job cuts in IT sector.

The layoff came as a shock to most employees nevertheless they were long expecting it, given the serial layoffs happening across social media companies.

Some employees awoke to reality of job loss after they failed to access corporate systems. However Pichai reportedly said the process of laying off was far from random.

Fiona Cicconi, Google's chief people officer told an employee meeting that “we have over 30,000 managers at Google” adding that “We wanted to give certainty sooner."

Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat told the meeting that job cuts could free the company up to continue investing in key priorities.

It was reported that severance packages had been structured to reward long time workers at the company.
