Elon Musk unveils 'Grok' AI bot to rival ChatGPT, claims superiority in benchmarks

San Francisco: Elon Musk has introduced his own artificial intelligence bot, named Grok, aimed at challenging ChatGPT, with Musk asserting that the prototype surpasses ChatGPT 3.5 across various benchmarks.

Grok, the inaugural product from Musk's xAI company, is currently undergoing testing with a restricted group of users in the United States.

Unlike other bots relying on static datasets, Grok leverages data from Musk's X, previously known as Twitter, making it more informed about recent developments, according to the company's website. Notably, Grok is designed to respond "with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak," as highlighted in the official announcement.

Elaborating on his stance regarding AI development, Musk, a signatory of a petition earlier this year advocating for a pause in advancing AI models to facilitate the establishment of shared safety protocols, expressed skepticism about its efficacy. He stated, "I signed that letter knowing it was futile. I just wanted to be on the record as recommending a pause."

The recent executive order signed by US President Joe Biden underscores the need for AI oversight, with a focus on establishing standards for security and privacy protections. Concurrently, discussions on AI risks were held at the UK's AI Safety Summit, where tech leaders and academics deliberated on the potential hazards associated with the technology.

Grok, the outcome of two months of development, is expected to become available to all X Premium+ users following the conclusion of the testing phase.

Musk envisions expanding X beyond its social platform foundation into an all-encompassing application similar to Tencent Holding Ltd.'s WeChat in China.

Grok is positioned as a crucial element in achieving this goal, and although xAI operates as a distinct entity, it intends to collaborate closely with X, Tesla, and other businesses.

The emergence of Grok marks Elon Musk's foray into the AI landscape, introducing a bot that he believes can outperform existing benchmarks and contribute to the evolution of AI applications.
